The Other Journal: Aesthetics Issue

I'm going to do something a little unusual for this blog and send you somewhere else. The Other Journal's current issue is devoted to aesthetics. I haven't finished exploring it yet but so far have found a lot of interesting essays. Take a look.

And many of you on are vacation and/or taking a break from your computers, but if you're around this week, please leave me a comment about one of your favorite beauty moments this summer.

I have 2 favorite beauty moments from this summer. The first was during our church's VBS presentaion, when I had the blessing of leading nearly 200 kids in singing songs glorifying God. And the second was on a park lawn in Duluth on July 3rd. The temperature was perfect, the music was patriotic and the fireworks were awesome! A beautiful moment spent with my family and some friends.

One favourite beauty moment that comes to mind is sitting in our backyard with the air fluttering with birds and their young broods.

We've been enjoying the visits of our redwinged blackbirds, purple finches, chipping sparrows, robins, and our resident pair of tree swallows (who are now busy feeding hungry beaks).

I just love seeing our feathered friends and am so glad God created us to enjoy and love them.

PS. I just went to the link you suggested. Wow, I am looking forward to a real visit over there.

Thanks so much for sharing! Lots of interesting essays on our favourite topic.

Brenda,

Yes, there's a lot of good stuff in that journal. Lots to think about.

We've enjoyed the birds too. We have a family of finches, a couple of indigo buntings, and a pair of cardinals that stay year-round.

Julie,

The older I get, the more I appreciate fireworks shows. You'd think it would be the other way around. But then again, I'm becoming more patriotic, too, as I get older. We gathered on the town square near my parents' house and watched the show with a small crowd of like-minded folks who didn't want to get stuck in traffic near the field.

As we drove home on a lonely and windy back road, we heard the boom of more fireworks going off. We thought we had seen the finale but they must have found a stash somewhere at the last minute. Then suddenly the last of the fireworks exploded to our left. The image is imprinted on my mind: the dark night, moon fullish, a clearing beside the road, then sudden flash of green above that was so very close. We gasped, surprised, and then it was gone. It felt like our very own finale! That one spot on that lonely road would have been the perfect vantage point for the whole show.

It was a great night. God bless America!
